About the Sponsor
The National Geographic Society (NGS) awards grants for conservation, education, research, storytelling, and technology (‘Project Focus Definition’) through its Committee for Research and Exploration. All proposed projects must be novel and exploratory, and be of broad interest. NGS grant-funded projects should be bold, innovative, and transformative. The Committee will not usually consider applications that support strictly laboratory or collections work .  Those planning work in foreign countries (i.e., a country other than their own) should include at least one local collaborator as part of their expedition team.

Standard Grants

A Standard Grant application is a request for funding by an experienced project lead. Standard Grants must respond to NGS Project Focus Definition areas (conservation, education, research, storytelling, and technology). The applicant and his or her team members are expected to demonstrate successful completion of similar projects with measurable and/or tangible results.

Budget: Standard Grants are typically funded for less than US $30,000.

Eligible costs: Project team members such as ad-hoc consultant/s or local staff hire. N.B.: the total of all salary/stipends cannot exceed 20% of the total budget and must be justified in the Budget Justification section of the application. Travel, accommodation, visa and consumables.

Ineligible costs: KAUST-employed /full-time staff (i.e. PI, Postdocs, students), IDC costs.

Sponsor deadline for Standard Grants: Standard Grants can be submitted at any time, although they will be reviewed at the subsequent quarterly meeting.

Applicants must be registered. Submission is online.
N.B. There are strict formatting and word limitations (text fields)!

Requests for Proposals (RfPs)

The National Geographic Society has created a series of targeted requests for proposals (RFPs) intended to focus funding around certain key issues, including:
RfP Budgets: Budget max. vary from $50,000 up to $100,000/  24 months (check individual topic pages)

Eligible costs:
Project Team Members not on full-time salaries may request compensation.  However, this amount cannot exceed 20% of the total budget and must be justified in the Budget Justification section of the application.
A project might require Assistants or Consultants.  If so, these individuals are not listed as Team Members and their compensation does not form part of the 20% max. (of the total restriction criteria).  If included, these costs must be justified in the Budget Justification section of the application.
Travel/fieldwork costs; accommodation, visa, consumables/supplies and some lab/analyses costs.
Some RfPs allow for IDC costs (at 15%) where budgets are >$50,000.

Ineligible costs: KAUST-employed /full-time staff (i.e. PI, Postdocs, students), conference travel and publication fees.

Sponsor deadline for targeted RfPs: There are quarterly deadlines; next deadline: (11:59pm ET) Wednesday, 4 April 2018.

Applicants must be registered. Submission is online.
